Unlike the punchy, synth-pop vibe of his previous offering, Lambert sounds calm and reflective while being supported by more upbeat EDM/dance production by the hands of Aoki and Jaehn. The refreshing, summer-ready sound of "Can't Go Home" brings together the strengths of all artists involved. From the smooth progression of the backing beats, to the soothing and captivating vocal performance of Lambert, the pieces fall into place on a potential radio smash.
While labeled as a Aoki/Jaehn project, the two DJs handled the infectious production and endearing songwriting, it's all used to elevate and heighten the effectiveness of Lambert's vocals. He has not ventured into the world of EDM many times before (#JusticeForLayMeDown), but it's clear that his presence is a necessary ingredient in the song's success. "Can't go home tonight 'til I work it out with you, standing on the edge of something we can't afford to lose," Lambert sings sensitively on the intro, setting up a story of fixing mistakes before they overpower the love.
Though initially leaked earlier this week, "Can't Go Home" still comes with a few surprises. The first being that the song is now over a minute shorter than what was first heard. The extended intro has been cut entirely, it's quick to get to the slight vulnerability in Lambert's vocals. An extended middle production break is also shortened, as is the closing. This causes the charming rush of the song to keep its momentum. While the extended version will work for energetic festivals, this seemingly radio-geared version seems to be a more appropriate fit.
Lambert is proving that he's one of the hardest working men in the music industry today. Not only is he still promoting his third studio album The Original High on his current U.S. tour, but he found time to team up with Laleh for "Welcome to the Show" and even more time to allow Aoki and rising star Jaehn to take him out of his comfort zone, expanding the possibilities of what a future full length project from the "Ghost Town" singer could sound like. For now, "Can't Go Home" will tide anticipated fans over as they prepare for the next laidback months.
