That a single Kiganjo-trained cop with no military or elite skills has evaded cops for almost a fortnight has given sleuths reasons to believe she is being protected by colleagues.
Consequently, the Government has formed an elite multi-agency team comprising the police, the military, and officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to add more impetus in the hunt for fugitive police officers Corporal Caroline Kangogo- accused of two murders.
Kangogo is wanted for allegedly killing a fellow police officer in Nakuru and another man in Juja, Kiambu County.
Nation reports that the police are now extra vigilant with surveillance mounted on major highways, including the Nairobi-Nakuru-Eldoret and the Nairobi-Mombasa highways, and in hotels and monitoring communication.
“We have expanded our hunt to major highways, hotels, lodges, and other places where we feel she could be hiding. Soon we shall arrest her,” said a senior detective with the DCI Special Service Unit.
Nakuru County Criminal Investigations Officer Anthony Sunguti said the search had been complicated by the suspect’s dumping her known mobile phone.
“The suspect has switched off her phone so that police cannot track her moves. However, our teams have stepped up their hunt for her,” Mr. Sunguti told the Nation.
It has further emerged that the fugitive police officer could have been involved in shady dealings with fellow police officers and investigators suspect that she is being protected by rogue members of the service.
Search for the elusive officer and investigation into the two murders has unearthed an intricate web of rogue officers operating under two syndicates in the Rift Valley, one of which Cpl Kangogo was part of.
The syndicates, according to police officers privy to the investigations, and who did not want to be named, are involved in robberies, extortion, and protection of politicians and business people in Nakuru, Eldoret, Kapsabet, Kericho, and other towns in the Rift Valley.
Ostensibly, there was more to the killings of John Ogweno on Monday last week and Peter Ndwiga the next day.
Constable Ogweno was found murdered inside his vehicle at the Kasarani Police Station in Nakuru, while Ndwiga was found slain in a hotel room in Kiambu on Tuesday.
Investigators believe that at least four people may have been involved.
Among them was Ndwiga, a former police officer who ran a security company that operates in Juja. The killing may have been an inside job, and those police officers may have been involved.
“Some of the people she has been communicating with are senior officers and some dangerous criminals who are being pursued by the police,” an officer revealed
“What needs to be done now is to protect Cpl Kangogo from her rogue colleagues – some of whom are senior members of the police service – so that once she is arrested, she can give the real account of what happened,” the officer said.
He added Ndwiga helped Cpl Kangogo to escape to Kiambu on the day PC Ogweno was murdered.
“Her house was left open, her phone was found at the scene of PC Ogweno’s murder, and a receipt bearing her name was found in Mr. Ndwiga’s pockets,” the officer said.
“A police officer of her caliber would know better than leaving clues all over. Why also would she use her ATM card to pay for meals and accommodation if she is indeed trying to conceal her whereabouts?”
Her distraught parents, Barnaba Kipkoech Korir and Leah Jepkosgei Kangogo, on Wednesday, regretted their daughter’s action.
“Ajisalimishe kwa polisi sababu pia yeye ni askari ambaye anajua sheria. Ni vizuri ajitoe na ajisalimishe kwa polisi (I urge her to surrender to police because she is also an officer who knows what the law says. It is important that she gets out of her hiding and surrenders to police),” he said.
